The Reborn Hesaraghatta lake

December 3, 2017

An out of blue tropical cyclone over Arabian sea keeping the skies of Bangalore busy. Chilly weather engulfed city with occasional rains resulting in lethargic activity. This Sunday, we had presence of Sun God blessing the region with shine of warmth. The skies of Bangalore and around were eventually liberated from gloomy weather after the out-of-blue cyclonic storm faded away from adjoining Arabian sea.

I had read from various sources that the Hesaraghatta lake had revived after many years and people are thronging to break loose from city's shackles. My plan was to visit as early as fag end of October but unknowingly procrastination ruled. This Sunday, I broke idleness and rode towards Hesaraghatta lake. A healthy ride of 45 mins lead me to the lake location. Due to prior knowledge about geography of the lake, I straight away steered towards the west shore to have more closer look first.

My soul exhilarated as I witnessed brimming lake waving towards the shore. The last visit I was contended with looking at couple of swamps but dry land dwarfed tiny swamps as well.  Hesaraghatta lake, a fresh water container located 30 kms north of Bengaluru finally bloomed from bleakness after years thanks to the monsoon rains that teemed the region profusely in year 2017. The colossal container enchanted by monsoon rains which pummelled the region for almost 2 months in mid of 2017 is lifeline of nearby villages.

Monsoon vivifies landscape and Hesaraghatta lake is just an example out of millions. The copious rains that blasted the region for two months had revived the desolated water body and brought back the glory of fresh water lake. Unlike the musty Bangalore lake, this lake is exclusively fed by rains & natural drains and nothing else. I had confirmation from a villager as well :-). "Illa sir yella male neeru idu" (No Sir, this is all rain water), he chuckled. The fishing activity has resumed too and one can observe local fishermen eagerly waiting for the prey to be trapped in their net.  As I reached the west end of the shore, I noticed more attractive scenes than from the designated promenade. Unfortunately, the visitors blemish the place with alcohol remnants. Some of them even spoil the natural aura with tobacco stink. The alcohol group is vociferous and out of control. Some of them even rode/drove vehicles, drunken. Watch out for those squids, their insanity puts makes you vulnerable to accidents. Some of them even tried to collide against my vehicle. These brusque throttling stoned racers put you on your toes. Moreover, the jagged roads without tarmac make you precarious while braking the two wheeler. Due to my limited speed, I could easily escape their aggression.

After a healthy 45 mins stay, I rode towards the main entrance of lake where authorities have constructed promenade and benches for the visitors to unwind and breathe the nature. The trail is now renovated with interlocks. I had pleasant walk over the bund enjoying the expansive view of lake. A temple of Devi bisects the bund. The temple looks renovated while compared to earlier visit. The promenade covers just tiny part of lake periphery say 200 mts. Given the vastness of lake, it would be expensive to construct full promenade. Better to restrict the concrete to minimal area so that natural touch is not hampered. Also the visitors tend to blemish the spots with rampant littering.

The Sun is faint towards the evening in Northern hemisphere and sets early as shortest day approaches. From past 3 days, the region was bereft of any bright sunlight. This chilled the chilly winter. The presence of the faint evening was respite finally but not enough to contain the cold weather. I was also anticipating some drama in the sky but was thwarted by the faint sun. It also gets cold nowadays during evening time. Despite the insipid horizon, I managed to nail few good shots.

My path to home is covered with forest half way and had to start early to avoid dark ride. I wanted to reach home to avoid the spooky roads.

Considering the landscape, the photographers can make merry during sunrise.

Last but not the least, please do not trash the place.

Our previous visit was insipid due to poor monsoon season. We were literally teed off looking at the eternal barren land. Overlooking from bund just displayed the expansive landscape of lake without water. That showed vastness of the lake and this time it showed its storage capacity. Nature shows us how to be patient and when time arrives, it is joy all over.

This is not the only container which is rejuvenated by the monsoon. There are many nearby Bangalore which reaped the benefits of unprecedented monsoon season. Many container which were barren for years, revived thanks to the energetic monsoon rains which lasted for 2 months. I plan to visit each one of them before the scorching Sun evaporates the container

Here is short video of visit. I carried my wide angle lens which lacked IS. That was the grave mistake committed despite knowing that light is thinner. Moaning apart, enjoy the glimpses from this massive lake shot as an out-of-blue cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea dissipated. Infact, this lake needs more such vigorous monsoon seasons to swell to its full potential.
