Thombattu Falls, Hosangadi, Kundapura Taluk

9th January 2021

Kundapura hosts some of majestic waterfalls tucked away from human habitation. Most of them are happily jumping deep inside the forest inaccessible to humans. We were thinking of visiting some of them but due to dense jungle and long-stroll, skipped many of them. The only waterfall left was Thombattu falls which was accessible by road without trek involved. Many complained that there won't be any water at this time and it would be futile to visit waterfall. We thought to give it try rather than relying on internet feedback. As I wrote in previous post on Parapaadi falls, if it is not worth you have route for next visit, if it is good nothing to loose!

The winding road past Hosangadi

Today we set on mission to explore the Thombattu falls situated just 40kms from Hosaadu village. We started our journey at 9AM towards the Western ghats. The first stop was Hole Shankaranarayana temple. We were lucky to have darshan of deity at temple. More details in dedicated post. Then we headed towards Hosangadi which resides at foothills of western ghats. The initial hurdle is crossing police checkpost at hosangadi. They allowed us without any additional checks since we were in traditional attire and with family. They were sure that, we would not vandalize or commit malice activities :-). We drove through the interior roads and reached the deviation point. From here, 1km drive through the dense jungles along mud road, leads you to waterfall. It was time to play.

The last 1km through dense jungle is mud road.

The stream which is the source of waterfall

The waterfall is cascade type and derives its name from Thombattu village where it is located. There was considerable water in second cascade but not first one. The flow of the water is regulated by varahi power corporation and hence water level is guaranteed only during monsoon season. This is reason we saw limited water flow despite being situated at the foothill of western ghats. The fresh water flow was enough to take bath and enjoy. My kids played enthusiastically in clean water. The second cascade is quite far from the primary one. This plunge is quite sharp and has more depth. The second cascade may not be accessible during peak monsoon season. Looks like there are trails over hills to reach this cascade but only can be viewed. After an hour of stay & lunch at waterfall, we bid adieu to nature and returned to Hosaadu.

How to reach:

Follow google maps. From the designated pinned area at maps, one has to drive 100-200mts to reach waterfall. You will come across short bridge which is the landmark for waterfall. The stream beneath is source of waterfall. From here, one has to have short downhill over the boulders to reach waterfall.

When to visit:

Visit during break monsoon period (August-September) season or whenever the sun comes out during monsoon season. The peak monsoon may be difficult to handle and authorities may forbid entry to waterfall. Watch out for the slippery boulders on the way to waterfalls. They may be death trap. Post September, the waterfall may not be horrific and amiable for playing. Still watch out for those hard rocks.

Food:

Its dense jungle which implies no shops or food source. Carry your own food or from Siddapura town or even may be Hosangadi village. Kindly carry trash bags. Do not trash our pristine western ghats. They are our natural wealth

A concluding request:

Please do not resort to adventure or malice activities. Do not consume alcohol or trash this divine place. Kindly carry trash bag with you to collect the wastes. Any mischief or unfortunate incident will tempt the authorities indefinitely close the entry to waterfalls.
